Bangladesh cricket bid an emotional farewell to veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad as he played his final T20I match against India in Hyderabad.
The third T20I of the series, held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, marked the end of Mahmudullah's storied T20I career for Bangladesh. Ahead of the match, he was honored with a commemorative crest, presented to him by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto on behalf of the entire team.
Mahmudullah, who holds the record for the most T20I appearances for Bangladesh, was previously the captain during the 2021 T20 World Cup. However, after a dip in form, he lost both his captaincy and his place in the squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Despite these setbacks, Mahmudullah made a strong comeback through a stellar performance in the most recent Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), earning his spot back in the national team. He was also part of Bangladesh's squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, although his performance came under scrutiny, particularly after five consecutive dot balls in a crucial match against Afghanistan.
Before taking the field for the last time in the T20I format, Mahmudullah received a heartfelt tribute from his teammates. Former Bangladesh captain and current commentator for the series, Tamim Iqbal, also joined the ceremony, coming down to shake hands with Mahmudullah on the field.
As Mahmudullah’s T20I career comes to an end, his contributions to Bangladesh cricket—both as a player and a captain—will be remembered. His ability to rise in crucial moments and his leadership will leave a lasting legacy in Bangladesh cricket history.
