West Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop has praised Pakistan captain Babar Azam, claiming he will be the greatest white-ball cricketer of all time, particularly in the 50-over format.
"Babar Azam is on his way to greatness," Bishop said, “And I want to be clear when I say I'm on my way there, at least in white ball cricket and certainly in 50-overs cricket.
“Because I don't use the term great loosely. I think I discussed this with some of my colleagues 24 hours ago, it needs to be a larger sample size but average as it stands now on the verge of 60 to 17 ODI hundreds.
"He has almost overtaken his neighbor, the great Virat Kohli, as the ultimate over-50 batsman," he added.
The former pacesetter went on to say that he sees Babar as one of the greatest cricketers of the future and hopes he will improve his red ball skills as he is a superb player technically and in character.
"So I hope that in Test cricket he will be mentioned in the same breath as the top 3 or 4, but as a white ball player and particularly in ODIs, technically excellent, spirited and aesthetically the most appealing batsman in the world today."
Babar hasn't been particularly impressive at Tests, but it's clear he's improved his longer format skills as one of his innings was named the best batting performance of the 2021-2023 ICC World Test Championship.
Bishop also appreciated his covers and straight drives and said he always notices other commenters taking to social media to praise Babar every time he plays.
"Whenever he comes out to hit, I have a few fellow commentators and I just look for their tweets on social media when he's playing a cover drive or a straight drive. That says a lot when people who've played the game show up to watch you hit," he concluded.
