West Indies captain Rovman Powell candidly addressed his team’s struggles after their second consecutive defeat against Bangladesh in the T20I series. Bangladesh secured the match by 27 runs in Kingstown, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Powell acknowledged the team’s ongoing batting woes and urged reflection and improvement.
Following another lackluster performance with the bat, Powell didn’t mince words about the team’s shortcomings: "At the start, we made the right decision. When we look at how we get out, we have to rectify that. We felt that it is a different pitch. In the past, it was low and slow, now a little bit more grass cover, felt it will come on."
The West Indies’ batting order collapsed yet again, managing only 102 runs in 18.3 overs while chasing a modest target of 130. Powell attributed the defeat to repeated batting failures: "Disappointing, as a batting group we have let down ourselves miserably in the last few series. We have to reflect on things individually and then look at it collectively."
Bangladesh posted 129/7 in their 20 overs, thanks to Shamim Hossain’s unbeaten 35 off 17 balls. Taskin Ahmed (3/16) and Mahedi Hasan (2/20) ensured West Indies never got going in the chase. Roston Chase (32 off 34) and Akeal Hosein (31 off 31) offered some resistance, but their efforts were not enough to save the game.
Powell emphasized the need for a collective reset and called on the team to play for the pride of Caribbean cricket: "The bowlers did well, but as a batting group we have not come to the party, and we are struggling to put in a complete game. It's just a case of playing for the people of the Caribbean now more than ever."
Despite some progress in the T20 format, Powell admitted that recent performances have been a setback: "We have made some strides as a team in this format. These last few series have put us back, takes us back to the days when the past West Indies sides struggled."
