During the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 clash against South Africa on Monday, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell surpassed former cricketer Dwayne Bravo to become the highest wicket-taker for the Caribbeans in T20 World Cup history.
Russell bowled exceptionally well against the Proteas, managing to take two wickets in his four-over spell while conceding only 19 runs. These two wickets brought his total count in T20 World Cup history to 29, making him the highest wicket-taker for the West Indies in the tournament's history. This achievement surpassed the previous record held by Dwayne Bravo, who had taken 27 wickets in the marquee event. Russell's remarkable performance on Monday showcased his skill and consistency as a key player for the West Indies.
However, it was not enough as South Africa yet again managed to win a close game, which resulted then being qualified to the semi finals, eliminating West Indies.
In the run-chase of 136 runs, South Africa lost two early wickets. Due to rain interruptions, the Proteas were set a revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs. The match was finely balanced at one point, with South Africa at 110/7 in 15.2 overs, despite crucial contributions from Tristan Stubbs (29 off 27 balls, with four boundaries) and Heinrich Klaasen (22 off 10 balls, with three fours and a six). However, Jansen (21*) and Rabada (5*) found boundaries at critical moments, ultimately finishing the chase with five balls to spare and three wickets in hand.
