India have been one of the most dominant teams in international cricket, consistently performing at the highest level across formats of the game. With a rich cricketing history, a deep talent pool and a passionate fan base, India has cemented itself as a powerhouse in world cricket, without a shadow of a doubt. Over the years, the team has produced legendary players, thrilling matches, and unforgettable victories.

One of the key indicators of India’s success is their performance in ICC tournaments. The Indian cricket team has reached 14 ICC finals. Out of these, India has emerged victorious six times, shared one title, and faced defeat in seven finals.
Each of these matches has played a crucial role in shaping India’s journey in global cricket. Let’s take a closer look at these finals and what they meant for Indian cricket.
India's first major triumph came in the 1983 World Cup when they defeated the mighty West Indies to lift their first-ever ICC trophy under Kapil Dev's captaincy. This victory changed Indian cricket forever. However, the next time they reached a final, in the 2000 Champions Trophy, they lost to New Zealand.
In 2002, Sourav Ganguly's Indian cricket team faced Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy final, but the match ended in a tie due to rain, and both teams shared the trophy. The 2003 ODI World Cup final was a tough loss for Ganguly-led India as they were beaten by a dominant Australian side.
In 2011, India lifted their second ODI World Cup after 28 years by defeating Sri Lanka in the final under MS Dhoni's captaincy. This was an emotional moment for the entire country, as it was won at home in Mumbai. The success continued in 2013 when MS Dhoni-led Team India won the Champions Trophy by defeating England in a rain-affected match.
However, the team faced heartbreak in the next few finals. In the 2014 T20 World Cup, India lost to Sri Lanka, and in the 2017 Champions Trophy, they were beaten by Pakistan. The struggles continued in Test cricket as well. India lost the 2021 World Test Championship final to New Zealand and again in 2023 to Australia.
The 2023 ODI World Cup final was another painful defeat for India, as Australia once again denied them the trophy. But in 2024, Indian fans finally had a reason to celebrate. The Men in Blue won the T20 World Cup, defeating South Africa and ending their ICC trophy drought under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
India stamped their authority in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Men in Blue got the better of the Black Caps by 4 wickets to win their seventh ICC title and decorated their illusive trophy cabinet.
