Alex Gidman has stepped down as Worcestershire head coach, ending his four-year tenure in the role.

Gidman joined Worcestershire in early 2018, initially as a 2nd XI manager. He was involved with the side that won the T20 Blast that summer before taking over as head coach after Kevin Sharp moved into a managerial position.

"I've enjoyed my time at Worcestershire and I want to thank the club for their support," said Gidman. "I wish the club all the best for the future."

Club Chairman Fanos Hira added: “Alex has led the club to great success, winning the T20 Blast in 2018 and finishing second in 2019. We wish him all the best for the next steps in his career and thank him for his contribution to our club. "
Gidman's departure comes amid changes in the county's governance structure. A director of cricket is due to take office in the near future - the first time the club has had someone in that position in a standalone capacity, with Steve Rhodes previously holding that title while also serving as head coach until his retirement in 2017.

"Alex has led the club to great success, winning the T20 Blast in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2019," said Worcestershire chairman Fanos Hira. "We wish him all the best for the next steps in his career and thank him for his contribution to our club."

Worcestershire finished fourth in Division Two of the County Championship but endured a tough year in white ball cricket, winning only twice in the Blast and twice in the Royal London Cup, and sustained the group stage standings in both competitions.

They are also in for a transitional winter on the player side after losing England star Moeen Ali and homegrown all-rounder Ed Barnard to local rivals Warwickshire.

Gidman's departure follows that of all-rounders Ed Barnard and Moeen Ali, who both join local rivals Warwickshire for 2023.

Worcestershire announced in July they were planning a change in structure, with the club looking to recruit a cricket director for a new wide-ranging role who will be "responsible for all coaching, cricket operations, science and medicine and the academy".
