Pakistan’s Test captain Shan Masood addressed a critical media question on Monday, comparing the statistics of Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique to Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli’s initial Test years. Masood defended his teammate a struggling opener, highlighting that Shafique, despite his current form, has better numbers than Kohli did in the early phase of his Test career.
During a fiery press conference, a journalist questioned the consistency of Pakistan’s selections and the continued inclusion of players like Shafique, Babar Azam over alternatives such as Kamran Ghulam.
Shafique has scored 457 runs in his last 19 innings, averaging 24.05, but his performance includes a double century against Sri Lanka. Without that innings, his average falls to 14.22, prompting questions about his form. Despite this, Masood stood firm, backing Shafique as a key player for Pakistan.
“Have we still not come out of this liking and disliking in the team? We are continuing to give those (inconsistent) players chances...Shouldn't (batsman) Kamran Ghulam be given a chance from now on?... Be it Abdullah Shafique or Saim Ayub, the same set of players are playing the T20s and Tests,” asked a journalist.
In reply, Masood said: "With all due respect, I don't think your question is accurate...I agree that Pakistan hasn't played good cricket in 2024. If I back a player who becomes a good servant for Pakistan cricket and lose my own spot in the process, I will have no regrets.
“Things should be looked at objectively. You talk about stats. The other day I was reading a stat that Abdullah Shafique, who has played 19 Tests, has a better record than Virat Kohli.”
As Pakistan prepares for the upcoming Test series against England, Masood continues as captain, with Babar Azam also included in the XI, despite recent criticism of his form. Pakistan’s bowling unit will once again be led by Shaheen Afridi, as they aim to turn around their fortunes.
