In a recent interaction with fans, South African cricket legend AB de Villiers shut down rumors of Rohit Sharma potentially joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2025 IPL season. During a Q&A session on his YouTube channel, de Villiers expressed disbelief at the idea, giving the chances of Rohit leaving Mumbai Indians (MI) a "0.1 percent" probability.
Rohit Sharma's future at Mumbai Indians has been a hot topic after he was removed as captain last season, with Hardik Pandya replacing him. While the decision received backlash from fans who viewed it as disrespectful toward Rohit, who led MI to five IPL titles, de Villiers believes Rohit's connection with MI remains unshakable.
“I almost laughed at the Rohit comment. That will be quite a story if Rohit moves from Mumbai Indians to RCB. Wow! Imagine the headlines. It will be bigger than Hardik Pandya's move. But if Rohit moves from Mumbai to join his rivals in RCB...oh my god! I don't think there is an option there. I don't see a possibility of MI leaving Rohit. I will give that zero or 0.1 per cent chance,” de Villiers said, adding his amusement to the speculation.
Rumors of Rohit entering the IPL 2025 mega auction have been swirling, with former India batter Mohammed Kaif even urging RCB to make a bid for the India captain. However, de Villiers’ statement firmly dismisses this idea, stating that Rohit’s bond with MI is too strong for such a move to happen.
Shifting focus to RCB’s leadership, de Villiers also backed Faf du Plessis to continue as captain, despite the South African veteran turning 40. He highlighted Faf’s value to the team and expressed confidence that Virat Kohli would support him in his leadership role.
“Age is just a number, guys. I don't see why his turning 40 would be an issue. He has been there for a few seasons, and the players are used to him. I understand there has been pressure on him because he hasn't won the trophy for RCB, but he has been exceptional as a player. I think Virat will back him with all his experience,” de Villiers said.
