Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has expressed his astonishment at star batter Virat Kohli’s struggles against spin bowling during the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Known for his mastery over spinners, Kohli's LBW dismissals in all three matches raised concerns about his form.
Kohli was having a difficult time because he only scored 58 runs in three games. Chopra said that Kohli didn't seem to be able to read the line of the deliveries and that the 35-year-old even tried reviewing the decisions but without success.
In the first ODI, Kohli managed to score 24 runs before being trapped LBW by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga. The second match saw Kohli once again fall to a leg-spinner, as Jeffrey Vandersay dismissed him for just 14 runs, once more LBW. The final ODI continued the pattern, with Kohli being adjudged LBW for the third consecutive time, this time to Dunith Wellalage, after scoring 20 runs.
Chopra talked about Kohli's achievement on his YouTube channel and said that it is very rare to see a player of Kohli's level get out leg before in three straight games. He said it was surprising and worrying that Kohli couldn't control the spinners during the whole series.
"Virat Kohli, three matches, three leg before. I don't remember when it happened last time that Virat Kohli got a leg before three times. When he went back once, when he went forward twice, when he played in the wrong line," Chopra remarked.
Chopra further added, “When he got out three times, he also used the review three times. I mean, he used the review in the second game earlier. When he got out, maybe he didn't do it. But it didn't look like he was able to dominate. So, this was a little surprising.”
