For the first time in 16 years, Bangladesh is set to play a Test match without any of its iconic trio: Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, and Mushfiqur Rahim. The absence of these senior players heralds a fresh start for the team, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz stepping up as captain for the Antigua Test. Despite the void, Miraz is confident in the squad’s abilities and sees this as an opportunity to showcase the depth of Bangladesh cricket.
Ahead of the series opener against the West Indies, Miraz addressed the media, expressing his trust in the remaining experienced players and emerging talents.
"The senior players are not here, but now I, Mominul [Haque], and Litton [Das] are the senior ones in the team. All of us are very experienced. Two years ago, we played two Tests here, and we are staying positive," he said.
Shakib Al Hasan has retired, Tamim Iqbal has been absent from the national Test side for a while, and Mushfiqur Rahim is unavailable due to injury. Despite this, Miraz is optimistic about the team’s performance.
Miraz emphasized the potential of the younger players, expressing confidence in their ability to perform in challenging conditions. "These things happen. Mushfiq Bhai is not here this time. Shakib Bhai has announced his retirement. But we still have a strong team. The young players who have joined can do well in these conditions. We have the capability and belief to perform well," Miraz added.
The leadership transition marks a pivotal moment for Bangladesh cricket as it tests the squad’s depth and resilience in the absence of its long-standing stars.
