International career
Testing career
Mishra was initially named to the Indian squad for a Test against the West Indies in 2002, but was not selected. Mishra made his Test cricket debut against Australia in the Second Test at Mohali (PCA Stadium) after captain and first choice leg spinner Anil Kumble was injured. He took 5 wickets for 71 runs in Australia's first innings and then 2/35 in the second, making him the leading wicket taker in the match when India took a decisive victory.
Even so, Indian trainer Gary Kirsten said that if Kumble recovered for the third Test, Mishra would be dropped. Harbhajan Singh was injured, however, so Mishra kept his place when Kumble walked in. Kumble was then injured during the test and withdrew, making Mishra India's test leg moth of choice.
Mishra was selected for the New Zealand test tour in early 2009, but India chose to use only one spinner and he watched Harbhajan do the spinning tasks on his own. India's next Test wasn't until November 2009. Mishra only took one wicket in the high score-drawn First Test and he was dropped for the Second Test in favor of left-arm Orthodox spinner Pragyan Ojha, who took his position for the Third Test as the. kept second spinner.
Mishra was called back for the Bangladesh tour and was the only weirdo in the first test in Chittagong after Harbhajan sustained an injury. He made 50 in the second innings as the night watchman and took seven wickets. However, he was dropped again in the next test for Ojha.
Later on for the Indian cricket team in England in 2011, he scored his highest ever score of 84 in the final friendly. Mishra was added to the roster for India's West India Tour in 2016. He played two tests and picked up six wickets.
Limited over the career
Mishra made his One Day International (ODI) debut against South Africa during the 2003 TVS Cup. Mishra played in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.
At the start of the Bangladesh tour, Mishra played in two ODIs against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in a triangular tournament after Harbhajan was rested for the last two round matches. He was recalled for a one-day streak against Zimbabwe in July 2013. He won the man of the game for his 4/47 bowling against Zimbabwe in the 3rd ODI, played on July 28, 2013.
Mishra managed to get the most wickets from any bowler in a 5-match series or tournament against Zimbabwe in July 2013. The spinner also equalized the world record of Indian bowling grandmaster Javagal Srinath for the most wickets in a bilateral ODI series with 18 wickets. Srinath managed his performance in 7 matches, allowing Mishra to break the record in fewer matches.
Mishra bowled a fine spell for two wickets in the 6th game of the Asian Cup on February 2, 2014 against Pakistan (only at least 10 overs are taken into account). He was selected by Cricinfo in the 2nd XI of the 2014 ICC World T20 Cup.
Mishra was added to the roster for the 2016 West India tour. He won three wickets in one of the two T20I games and got his best 3/24 of his career in it. He was added to the ODI page on New Zealand's 2016-17 tour of India. He took 15 wickets in the five games, including 5/18 in the final game that helped India win the series 3-2, and was named the series' player.
He was the leading wicket taker for Haryana in the 2018/19 Vijay Hazare Trophy with sixteen layoffs in nine games.

On April 17, 2013, he scored a hat trick for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Pune Warriors India in the 6th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2013), making it the first player in the history of the IPL to score three hat tricks. He previously scored a hat trick at the 2008 IPL when he played for Delhi Daredevils against Deccan Chargers, and then again at the 2011 IPL when he played for Deccan Chargers against Kings XI Punjab. For his appearances in 2013 he was named in the Cricinfo IPL XI.
