Australia finally came back in the winning course by thumping Sri Lanka by 5 wickets on Monday (16th October) in Lucknow. Adam Zampa's excellent four fer and Inglis and Marsh's brilliant fifties helped Aussies get back in the business.
Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. Coming out to bat they were right on the money with their openers laid a solid platform for them. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera notched up a 100 run opening stand. They were smacking the Aussie bowlers and made them lacklustre. The opening stand was worth of 125 runs before Aussie skipper Pat Cummins broke the partnership with a beautiful delivery. He brought Australia back with another one and this time he got Kusal Perera with an absolute peach delivery. Perera was gone after scoring a brilliant 78 off 82 balls.
And then the real Aussie came with their brutal action. Adam Zampa was breathing fire and picked up Kusal Mendis for 9 off 13 balls, he trapped Samarawickrama for LBW and Sri Lanka fell into a deep trouble. Starc came and he uprooted the stumps of Dhananjaya De Silva. Zampa again trapped another one for LBW and that time it was Karunaratne. Sri Lanka eventually were bundled out for a paltry 209 despite a glorious start. They fell from 125-0 to 209 all out.
For Australia, Adam Zampa was the pick of the bolwers as he picked up 4 wickets. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins shared two wickets each and another one was taken by Maxwell.
In reply of 210, Australia started scratchy as they lost their two of the best batters Warner and Smith in the same over. Both of them were bamboozled by swing of new ball under the lights off Madushanka and Sri Lanka were pumped up. But Mitchell Marsh thwarted that chance. He was aggressive from ball one and was dealing in boundaries. He notched up a composed fifty and made 52 off 51 balls before getting run out by Kusal Mendis. Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis then stitched a fine partnership of 77 runs before Labuschagne got out to Madushanka for a gutsy 40 off 60 balls.
However, Josh Inglis notched up his fifty and immediately was gone but that didn’t make any impact in the game as the match was already done and dusted. And Glenn Maxwell's freak innings helped Australia win the match with 14 overs to spare and 5 wickets in hands.
