Yash Dayal, the left-arm pacer from Uttar Pradesh, has finally seen his hard work pay off, receiving his maiden Test call-up for India's first match against Bangladesh. The 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) was a dark chapter in Dayal's career, as he was hit for five consecutive sixes by Rinku Singh in a match-defining over. For Yash and his family, the trauma from that game was overwhelming, especially as schoolchildren would pass by their home chanting “Rinku, Rinku” as a constant reminder.
Yash’s father, Chanderpal Dayal, opened up about the difficult times that followed the match. The emotional toll was evident as his wife Radha fell sick, and Yash himself retreated into a shell, needing time away from the game to rebuild his confidence. His father shared how painful the experience was, calling it “an accident” for the family.
Despite the hardships, Chanderpal motivated Yash using the example of England's Stuart Broad, who had been hit for six sixes by Yuvraj Singh but later became one of the most successful seamers in cricket history. Chanderpal told Yash that his journey was far from over and that their dream was to see him play for India.
The path to redemption began when Dayal joined Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the 2024 IPL, taking 15 wickets in 14 matches and helping his side reach the playoffs. His stellar performances in the Duleep Trophy, where he took crucial wickets, cemented his place as a Test prospect, leading to his selection in India's squad for the Bangladesh series.
Chanderpal expressed his pride and joy, saying that representing India in Tests is the ultimate dream for any cricketer. “No matter how hard I would have tried, it was his efforts that got him where he has reached today,” he said, beaming with pride after Yash’s call-up.
