The Sri Lanka national cricket team continued their dominant form, completing a 2-0 whitewash over New Zealand in the two-match Test series. Under the leadership of Dhananjaya de Silva and the guidance of head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka delivered a commanding performance, bolstering their chances of reaching the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final.
After a thrilling 63-run win in the first Test at Galle, Sri Lanka hammered New Zealand by an innings and 154 runs in the second Test, securing one of their largest Test victories in history. The second match saw Sri Lanka posting a massive total of 602 runs in their first innings, powered by exceptional performances from Kamindu Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, and Kusal Mendis
New Zealand struggled in response, recording their lowest-ever Test total against Sri Lanka, as they were bowled out for a mere 88 runs. Prabath Jayasuriya was the star with the ball, taking a brilliant six-wicket haul, putting Sri Lanka firmly in control. Although New Zealand showed some resistance in the second innings, with Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips, and Mitchell Santner scoring fifties, Sri Lanka enforced a comprehensive win to complete the series sweep.
Following this clean sweep, Sri Lanka have strengthened their position in the ICC World Test Championship standings. They currently hold third place with a Points Percentage (PCT) of 55.55.Meanwhile, New Zealand's struggles have pushed them down to seventh place in the WTC standings, with their PCT dropping from 42.85 to 37.5 following consecutive losses.
