Gujarat Titans (GT) secured their first win of IPL 2025 in style, defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 36 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The home side dominated the match with a strong batting display and a disciplined bowling performance.

After being asked to bat first GT put up a competitive 196/8 in their 20 overs. Sai Sudharsan anchored the innings with a classy 63 off 41 balls while Shubman Gill (38 off 27) and Jos Buttler (39 off 24) played crucial knocks. The openers provided a solid 78-run stand, setting the tone for a big total.
Mumbai’s bowlers had their moments but they struggled to contain the GT batters in the powerplay. The pitch had variable bounce making stroke play tricky as the innings progressed.
Mumbai Indians never got going in their chase finishing at 160/6 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav was the lone warrior but he lacked support from the other batters. GT’s bowling attack led by Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and R Sai Kishore, kept MI in check with tight spells and crucial breakthroughs.
Hardik Pandya Mumbai Indians captain: "Tough to put (down where it went wrong). There were errors, we were not quite professional in the field - that cost us maybe 20-25 runs. They (the GT openers) did the right stuff in the powerplay, they did not play high-risk shots, they got enough runs (playing that way) and that put us on the back foot. Early stage, but at the same time, batters have to come to the party and hopefully they do that soon. I was just thinking I bowled way too many balls, they saw it was gripping and those were the toughest balls to score off. When you have this much variable bounce, it becomes difficult as a batter. They did the same to me (what I did as a bowler)"
R Sai Kishore: (On his stare-down with Pandya) "He is a very good friend of mine, inside the field, it should be like that. Anyone is an opponent but we do not take anything personally. I felt I was not getting as much purchase. Had to play for the team, had to bowl defensively, mixed it up a little bit. Felt it played better than what it looked. He (Suryakumar) played really well, he swept all my good length balls. When someone plays a good shot, you have to give credit to him. I did some things instinctively, Gill also told me (what to expect from Surya), having played with him (for India). I am actually looking forward to this season, have learnt very much, worked really hard."
Shumban Gill GT Captain: "The decision was taken before the first match that the second match will be played on black soil. Yes that was a factor as well but this wicket suits us. Batting on black soil once the ball gets old it's difficult to clear the boundary so we tried to maximize the powerplay. We can all talk about plans but some times it goes your way and it doesn't. I don't know, maybe this is the first time he didn't bowl four overs. I actually kept him for the end but I thought the pacers are bowling well. Prasidh was bowling well so just wanted to use the pacers. It's going to be good challenge for us"
Prasidh Krishna "Nothing much. Right now I don't have any words. I was itching to bowl. We sitting and watching how the first innings went. So we understood that cutters into the wicket were working well. I just figured that it was working well so didn't want to test the speed gun and tried to keep it simple"
