Virat Kohli broke two significant milestones previously held by Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai during the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
Kohli hit his 50th hundred during the match on Wednesday (November 15). This came only a few days after Kohli tied the record of 49 hundred in one-day internationals held by the Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli also broke Tendulkar's record for the most runs scored in the ICC ODI World Cup when the master blaster was watching from the stands.
With his 80th run in Wednesday's semi-final, Kohli surpassed Tendulkar's 2003 World Cup total of 673 runs and became the first batsman to achieve 700 runs in an ODI World Cup. Kohli had 711 runs at an average of 101.57 and a strike rate of 90.68 when he was removed for 117 off 113 balls.
At the age of 35, Virat Kohli achieved his century off fast bowler Lockie Ferguson with a two. He had taken 106 deliveries and had struck eight fours and a six to surpass the previous record of 49 ODI hundreds that he had shared with Sachin Tendulkar.
After scoring three figures in the semifinal match, Kohli extended his arms in the air, knelt, and saluted to the crowd while removing his helmet.
Kohli amassed three centuries this World Cup, in addition to five fifty-plus scores in ten encounters.
