Sarfaraz Khan and Virat Kohli played a pivotal role in earning India a crucial breakthrough on Day 1 of the second Test against New Zealand in Pune on Thursday, October 24. The duo was instrumental in getting New Zealand's No. 3 batter, Will Young, dismissed, despite neither of them being directly involved in the ball or the catch. This moment unfolded on the last ball of the 24th over.
The incident began when New Zealand was struggling at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Will Young attempted a shot off a delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin, but Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant caught the ball behind the stumps. Surprisingly, Pant didn’t appeal for the catch immediately. However, Sarfaraz Khan, fielding at short leg, was sure that Young had edged the ball.
Relying on his instincts and keen observation, Sarfaraz quickly approached India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, urging him to take a review. Confident in his judgment, Sarfaraz boldly declared, “Out hai... Out hai,” prompting Sharma to trust his call. Kohli, ever the tactician, also joined in urging Rohit to go for the DRS. The review was eventually taken, and it turned out to be successful, dismissing Young and giving India a crucial breakthrough.

India's bowlers continued to shine. Ravichandran Ashwin claimed the wicket of Conway after his well-played 65, and Washington Sundar took control from there. Sundar’s career-best figures of 7/59 tore through New Zealand’s middle order, eventually bundling them out for 259.
Ashwin and Sundar's combination proved lethal, as the duo shared all 10 wickets in the innings, keeping India in a dominant position at the end of Day 1.
