On Friday in Chennai, against South Africa, Pakistan used the concussion substitution legislation for the first time in ICC ODI World Cup history.
During Pakistan's World Cup encounter, Usama Mir replaced Shadab Khan due to the latter's concussion. A leg-spinner replaced a bowler of the same kind due to concussion regulations requiring a like-for-like substitution.
Shadab, fielding at mid-on, was injured on the second ball of the innings. The physio was able to find him laying on the ground as he was being treated. Even though a stretcher was sent out, Shadab walked off the field despite his pain.
Usama Mir was able to take his spot in the bowling attack according to the concussion substitution clause.
"Pakistan have taken a concussion substitute for Shadab Khan in the ongoing match against South Africa. Usama Mir will replace Shadab," said the Pakistan Cricket Board in a statement.
"Shadab hit his head while fielding. He briefly took the field, but after a thorough assessment, the Pakistan team medical panel decided to replace him. The substitute request was approved by the match referee."
However, Pakistan lost the match in the end with a hard fight. They lost the match by 1 wicket and now it becomes hard for them to reach in the knockouts as they have lost straight four matches after winning the first two in the tournament.
