In the absence of regular captain Tamim Iqbal, who is healing from a heart attack, Towhid Hridoy took over as captain of Mohammedan Sporting Club. He did a great job. In the ninth round of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), at Mirpur, the young batter led his team to a convincing 5-wicket win over the strong Prime Bank Cricket Club.
Prime Bank had a terrible time when they were put to bat and were bowled out for only 174 runs in 32.2 overs. Shamim Hossain stood tall at the other end while wickets fell at the other.
When Shamim came in at No. 7, he played a great perfect 89 off 61 balls, hitting 10 fours and 4 sixes. His counterattacking efforts kept Prime Bank from losing badly and helped them get a score that was at least somewhat acceptable.
Mohammedan's bowling was led by Taijul Islam, who came back with an impressive 4 for 5. Ebadot Hossain also contributed with 3 wickets.
In their attempt to reach 175, Mohammedan got off to a bad start, losing both openers, Rony Talukdar and Arafat Sunny Jr., for very little. Anchors in the middle order, Mahidul Islam Ankon (10), and Mahmudullah Riyad (7 off 22), also failed to make a mark.
What changed things, though, was how stand-in captain Towhid Hridoy and Mehidy Hasan Miraz worked together. The extra 91 runs they scored were very important and put Mohammedan very close to winning.
Before leaving, Hridoy made a calm 57 off 55 balls. Miraz, on the other hand, hit 67 off 55 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes, to help his team win with 20 overs to spare.
