Balapuwaduge Manukulasuriya Amith Jeevan Mendis is a Sri Lankan professional cricketer who was born on 15 January 1983 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Jeevan Mendis is a cricketer who plays for the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. He has been part of the team since 2010 and has enjoyed a successful period with the team. Jeevan Mendis was born on January 15, 1983 in Colombo. Jeevan Mendis made his debut for the Sri Lanka national cricket team in 2010 in the ODI/T20/Test format.
Jeevan Mendis plays for Sri Lanka National Cricket Team ODI/T20/Test format. He represents Sri Lanka, Barbados Tridents, Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, Combined Provinces, Delhi Daredevils, Derbyshire, Dhaka Division, Kanduta, Prime Bank Cricket Club, Sinhalese Sports Club, Sri Lanka A, Sri Lanka Board XI, Sri Lanka U19s , Sydney Sixers, Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club team in domestic cricket.
Early Career
Mendis was born in Colombo and attended S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. He debuted as a left-handed batsman in 2000–01 and led the U19 side to victory in a one-day game the following season. He represented the Sri Lanka senior team in 2005. He had the best bowling figures in the history of the U19 Cricket World Cup where he recorded 7/20 against Zimbabwe U19 until his record was beaten by Australian Jason Ralston (7/19) at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, then surpassed in the same tournament by Ralston's compatriot Lloyd Pope (who won 8/35). He is the only Sri Lankan to score a 7-wicket haul in an under-19 game.
Domestic Career
Mendis made his Twenty20 debut on 17 August 2004 for Sinhala Sports Club in the 2004 SLC Twenty20 tournament.
In Sri Lankan cricket, Mendis has played for Tamil Union since the 2008/09 season. He played as an overseas player for Derbyshire in England for the first half of the 2017 season.
In March 2018, he was named to Kandy's squad for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament. The following month, he was also named to Kandy's roster for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament.
In August 2018 he was called up to Colombo's squad for the 2018 SLC T20 League. In December 2018, at the 2018/19 Premier League tournament, he scored the best bowling figures of 2018 in a first class cricket match, scoring 9 to 53 from 29 overs. He was the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in the tournament, with 30 dismissals in five games.
In March 2019, he was named to Dambulla's roster for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament.
International Career
Mendis made his international debut in the 2010 Zimbabwe Tri-Nation Series in the 3rd game on June 1, 2010 against Zimbabwe. He didn't get an opportunity to bat as his number didn't show up, but he bowled 4 overs, gave 12 runs and took two wickets. In his second ODI of the series against India, he went unbeaten 35 balls from 35 where Sri Lanka won the match by 6 wickets. In the final of the series he took two wickets against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka won the championship comprehensively.
In the opening game of the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 against Zimbabwe in Hambantota, he went in the hole after 11.3 overs with 82/3 and hit a 43* from 30 ball, hitting 4 fours and a six and writing a breakthrough 49 ball 94 runs partnership with Kumar Sangakkara (44 from 26 balls) to help his team reach 182/4. With the ball, he went 3/24 from his 4 overs and deftly assisted spin partner Ajantha Mendis, who went for a record 6/8 from his 4 overs.
The same year he made his highest ODI score of 72 against India on 4 August 2012. However, Sri Lanka lost the match by 20 runs. On November 10, 2012, he achieved his best ODI bowling figures when he won 3 for 15 against New Zealand in a rain-affected game at Hambantota. Sri Lanka eventually won the match by 7 wickets and Mendis won the Man of the Match award.
After a three-year break in the international arena, Mendis was surprisingly brought in for the Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh in February 2018. He played his comeback match on February 15, 2018, winning two wickets for just 21 runs. Sri Lanka won the match by 6 wickets.
In April 2019 he was called up to the Sri Lanka squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. After a meager streak from bat and ball, he was left out of the limited roster after retiring from the World Cup.
T20 franchise cricket
In October 2018 he was called up to the Tshwane Spartans squad for the first edition of the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament. He was the joint leading wicket-taker for the team in the tournament, with sixteen layoffs in nine matches. In November 2019, he was selected to play for the Sylhet Thunder in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League.
Rise to Glory
Mendis caught everyone's attention after the U19 cricket tournament performance. During that tournament his right arm spin caused problems and claimed record-breaking numbers of 7 wickets for 19 runs against Zimbabwe in the group stage.
In the opening match of the 2012 World T20 against Zimbabwe, he hit 43* on 30 balls, including four fours and one six. With the ball, he took 3 wickets by giving up 24 runs from his 4 overs.
