Former Indian cricketer and iconic broadcaster Sunil Gavaskar has shared his thoughts on Australian pacer Mitchell Starc's prospects in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction. Gavaskar expressed doubts about Starc attracting the same hefty price as he did in the 2024 auction, where the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired him for a record-breaking ₹24.75 crore.
Starc’s performance throughout the tournament was mixed. His economy rate of 10.61 and average of 26.11 over 14 matches raised concerns, especially as he struggled in the group stage, conceding runs in crucial overs. However, the Australian quick redeemed himself in the playoffs, showcasing his match-winning ability, particularly in the semi-finals and finals, where his contributions were pivotal in securing KKR’s third IPL title.
Speaking on Star Sports’ show Game Plan, Gavaskar praised Starc for his late-tournament resurgence but expressed doubts about whether IPL franchises would be willing to break the bank for him again at the 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
“I think Mitchell Starc bowled well in the last two games—the semi-finals and the finals—but before that, he was pretty expensive, conceding lots of runs at the start and in the final couple of overs as well. So, I’m not too sure he will go for the kind of record price he went for in the previous auction,” Gavaskar commented
Despite his inconsistent form, Gavaskar believes KKR would still be interested in retaining Starc but at a lower price. The franchise, known for maintaining a winning combination, might pursue him in the upcoming auction, though not at the previous ₹24 crore figure.
"KKR would want him back in the team because you want to get back your winning combination as much as possible. So, KKR could go for him but not at 24 crores," Gavaskar added.
