Sri Lanka was fined 10 percent of its match fee for maintaining a slow over rate against South Africa in the fourth match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
The Sri Lanka cricket team was fined 10 percent of its match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for exhibiting a slow over rate during its recent match against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, India.
The penalty was imposed by Javagal Srinath, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, as Sri Lanka fell two overs short of the required over ratio, according to the ICC announcement on Sunday.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams must pay a fine of 5 percent of their match fees for each game they fail to bowl within the allotted time. In this case, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka accepted the fine, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
Dasun Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf equalized the attack.
The Arun Jaitley Stadium witnessed a display of ruthless batting skills as three of South Africa's top four batsmen unleashed blistering centuries, taking them to an unprecedented tournament score of 428-5.
Quinton de Kock reached a century while Rassie van der Dussen scored a remarkable 108. However, it was Markram who stole the show with his explosive innings of 106 off just 54 balls.
Markram, who was rightly named man of the match, surpassed the previous record set by Irishman Kevin O'Brien, who scored a century in 50 balls against England at the 2011 World Cup.
Former champions Sri Lanka made a valiant effort but were ultimately dismissed for 326 in 44.5 overs despite notable contributions from Kusal Mendis (76), Charith Asalanka (79) and Dasun Shanaka (68).
