Man of the match | Temba Bavuma (South Africa) |
After beating England in the first ODI of a 3-match series at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, South Africa have moved up a place and are now 10th in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.
South Africa leads the series 1-0 after beating England in the first game in Bloemfontein. After deciding to bat first, the Proteas hit a decent 298, with van der Dussen hitting a brilliant century. In response, England sailed home and put together an opening twinning of 146. But they suffered a breakdown in punching power due to relentless fast bowling and good captaincy from Bavuma.
Put more simply, the Proteas qualification for the 2023 World Championships in India will be influenced by this ODI series. With the stakes high for the home side, we're about to take a look at the preview, betting tips, pitch report and more ahead of the star of the second ODI in the same venue.
Temba Bavuma captain is under massive scrutiny solely for not leading the Proteas to an ODI series win since South Africa beat Indians 3-0 in early 2022. However, their recent performance showed how mature South African players can handle opposition pressure.
Before losing on January 27, England had not played a single ODI game since November 2022. At the same time, as the England team have yet to find their perfect combination for the 50-over format, they could again be runners-up venue in the 2nd ODI.
Match Preview
South Africa (SA) meets England (ENG) in their second ODI match at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on January 29. South Africa won the opening game by just 27 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series. Veteran hitter Rassie van der Dussen score 111 of 117 and David Miller hit fifty to help the Porteas at 298/7 while batting first. England all-rounder Sam Curran took three wickets but the returning Jofra Archers struggled.
England also got off to a good start in their chase, with opener Jason Roy scoring the best score with 113 from 91 and Dawid Malan adding 59 runs. But the South African bowlers staged a late comeback to beat England by 271 runs to secure a crucial win. Speedster Anrich Nortje took four wickets and returning pacesetter Sisanda Magala three wickets to lead South Africa to a 27-run victory.
Pitch Report
The pitch at Bloemfontein's Mangaung Oval has a batting friendly with an average first innings score of 242. Both teams' top batters hit big in the first game, but the pace bowlers dominated the game with old ball.
Toss Prediction
With 16 of the 32 games at the Mangaung Oval won by teams bowling first, South Africa will be fairly confident of batting first again at the 2nd ODI. Given how the ball bounced in the second innings of the 1st ODI, England too are hoping to bat first.
Weather Report
A rain interruption is not expected and the temperature would again be between 29 and 33 degrees during the season.
Head to Head
In the last four ODI games between these two teams, South Africa have won twice while England have won once and there has been one game that was not a result.
Betting Tips
We think the odds offered on England are quite generous and worth trying. England are a very strong batting team and although they were far from the best in the previous game, they almost won in the end. We expect it to recover and level the streak.
Bet on England to win.
Top Fantasy Picks Dream11 Prediction
Team South Africa Key Players
Rassie van der Dussen shows just how viciously he can attack England's raw and rigid fast bowling attack and will no doubt be a batsman of great importance for the home side.
Sisanda Magala The 32-year-old right arm fast was exceptional in his 9-over spell in the 1st ODI. Considering his bowling style, Magala's variation could again threaten the English fighting line-up.
Anrich Nortje After picking 4 wickets at an economy rate of 6.2 runs per over, Nortje will again pass the ball in the middle overs only to break the opposing players' rhythm.
Team England Key Players
Jason Roy After coming through a resilient century in the 1st ODI, Roy has seen many Nortje and Rabada face them until he sits firmly on the crease. There is no doubt that Roy will also try quite hard to counter the South African bowling attack on January 29th.
Sam Curran The underrated, left-armed, mid-paced bowler took 3 wickets for England and even figured out how to turn that pitch to his own advantage.
Jos Butler As captain and wicket take opponent of this newly formed England side, Butler appeared to be in fine form (he scored 36 runs from 42 balls in the 1st ODI) until he was intercepted by Quinton de Kock.
