Perth Scorchers have secured the services of star New Zealand allrounder Sophie Devine for the next two seasons, with the 34-year-old signing on ahead of the upcoming WBBL 10. This pre-draft signing, made under the Weber WBBL's new overseas player pre-signing rule, cements Devine’s future with the Scorchers as she continues to be a pivotal figure for the team.
Devine, who has been with the Scorchers since WBBL 06, has proven her worth time and again. Last season, she delivered another stellar performance, scoring 489 runs and taking 14 wickets, which earned her a place in the WBBL Team of the Tournament for the third time. Her overall contributions to the WBBL have been significant, as she currently ranks third on the all-time list for runs and is just two wickets away from reaching the 100-wicket milestone.
Reflecting on her decision to remain with the Scorchers, Devine expressed her excitement, stating, "I'm absolutely stoked to be returning to the Scorchers. I have built such a special connection with the players and staff over the past four seasons, and I couldn't imagine playing anywhere else." She also fondly recalled the Scorchers' WBBL 07 title win as a "special memory" and is motivated to help the team achieve success again in the upcoming season.
Devine's return to the Scorchers follows the addition of Mikayla Hinkley from Brisbane Heat, further strengthening the squad. The Scorchers have also retained key players like Alana King, who recently extended her contract for three more seasons.
As the Scorchers prepare for WBBL 10, Devine's experience and leadership will be crucial in their quest for another title, especially after last season's disappointing exit in the finals against Brisbane Heat. With the team’s core intact and new talent joining the ranks, the Scorchers are poised to make a strong push for glory in the upcoming season.
Perth Scorchers squad for WBBL 10 (so far): Chloe Ainsworth, Stella Campbell, Piepa Cleary, Maddy Darke, Sophie Devine (New Zealand), Mikayla Hinkley, Alana King, Lilly Mills, Chloe Piparo.
