Former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson has voiced his concerns over Australia's lackluster performance and response to sledging during the first Test against India in Perth. Johnson emphasized that the Australian team needs to show more fight, particularly in reaction to a sledging incident involving India's debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal and Australian pacer Mitchell Starc.
In his column for The West Australian, Johnson expressed his disappointment at seeing Australia's experienced players fail to stand up to the challenge.
He specifically referenced the sledging exchange between Yashasvi Jaiswal, the 22-year-old Indian opener, and the 34-year-old Mitchell Starc.
Despite Starc dismissing Jaiswal for a duck in the first innings, the young batter came back with a vengeance in the second innings, hitting Starc all over the ground and even taunting the veteran bowler for bowling too slow.
"As an outsider watching on, I want to see some fight from this Australian side. Not a debutant and a young opening batsman from India getting in the faces of our team on our own turf and sledging Mitchell Starc saying he’s bowling too slow. Let’s see some energy and intent with bat and ball, but even more so in the field where it was clearly lacking at Optus Stadium."
Looking ahead to the second Test in Adelaide, Johnson urged Australia to apply early pressure on India to avoid falling into a deeper hole in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With Australia trailing 0-1, Johnson warned that the team must act quickly to avoid a series-defining 0-2 deficit.
"The Border-Gavaskar series is far from over and it’s certainly not a time to panic. But Australia will need to put pressure on India early when the second Test gets underway at Adelaide Oval on Friday and keep it up or they could find the 1-0 deficit it hard to come back from. The Aussies were shown up in Perth and they will be feeling it as a team but have to move on quickly" He added.
