Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan made a stunning return to County Championship cricket, marking his debut for Surrey with an impressive 4-wicket haul against Somerset in Taunton.
After a 13-year hiatus from county cricket, the Bangladesh all-rounder reminded everyone of his class, finishing with figures of 4/97 from 33.5 overs, including seven maidens. This performance helped bowl Somerset out for 317 on the opening day of their Division One match.
Shakib's comeback began after Surrey, the defending champions and current table-toppers, brought him in to bolster their squad, with several players unavailable due to international duties. The 37-year-old previously represented Worcestershire and Leicestershire in county cricket but had not featured in the Championship since 2010.
Surrey captain Rory Burns introduced Shakib into the attack early in the match, and the left-arm spinner immediately put pressure on Somerset's batsmen. His first breakthrough came when he dismissed Somerset captain Tom Abell, who fell just short of his half-century. Shakib continued his excellent spell by claiming key wickets, including Kasey Aldridge, Craig Overton, and Brett Randell.
Despite Tom Banton's valiant 132-run effort for Somerset, Shakib's relentless bowling ensured that Surrey remained in control. His precise bowling, mixed with patience and guile, earned him the best bowling figures for his side on debut.
Shakib’s contribution was crucial as he helped Surrey restrict Somerset to a manageable total. Surrey, eyeing their third consecutive County Championship title, will undoubtedly benefit from his vast experience and match-winning ability in the coming matches.
