The England and Wales Cricket Board has requested that Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan undergo an analysis of his bowling action after umpires flagged concerns during his sole appearance for Surrey in this season's County Championship.
Shakib, now 37, took nine wickets for Surrey in an intense match against Somerset at Taunton in September, marking his first County Championship appearance since he played for Worcestershire over a decade ago in 2010-11.
Shakib had signed a short-term contract to bolster Surrey’s squad for their title run, stepping in at a time when eight players were away on England duty, including their main spinners, Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence.
Although Shakib made an instant impact, he couldn’t stop Somerset from clinching an impressive 111-run win, which temporarily stalled Surrey’s pursuit of a third consecutive Championship title. Over the course of the match, he bowled more than 63 overs without being no-balled for throwing. However, it has now come to light that on-field umpires Steve O'Shaughnessy and David Millns later flagged his bowling action as questionable.
This appears to be the first instance of Shakib’s bowling action facing scrutiny in his two-decade career, during which he has taken 712 wickets in 447 international matches, including 246 in 71 Test matches.
