The 31-year-old Aussie cricketer, who plays for Surrey in England's T20 Blast competition, hit a 34-ball century against Kent at The Oval on Saturday. This is the joint record for the fastest century in Vitality T20 Blast history. Another Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds scored a 34-ball century for Kent in 2004. This was the record for the fastest single century ever.
"I don't think people should be thinking about me and 'Roy' (Andrew Symonds) in the same breath," Abbott said after the century. “But it was a lot of fun. I was just grateful to find the middle of the bat."
Surrey lost 4 wickets for 64 runs in Saturday night's match. Standing there, Abbott did the impossible. He hit the first fifty of his career from 22 balls. Then he completed the century from 34 balls. In the end, Abbott remained unbeaten on 110 runs with 11 sixes off 41 balls. Surrey won the match against Kent by 41 runs.
Abbott's century is the fourth fastest in T20 cricket overall. Chris Gayle topped this record by scoring a 30-ball century. Besides, Rishabh Pant hit a 32-ball century and Wihan Lubbe registered a 33-ball century.
