New Zealand batters were out of sorts against Bangladesh in the first T20I which they lost by seven wickets.

The visitors were restricted to their joint-lowest total in T20Is - 60 in 16.5 overs - after electing to first.

Bangladesh spinners had New Zealand four wickets down for nine runs inside first four overs. Skipper Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls put on a steady stand but the lower order faltered.

"We probably didn't quite assess the conditions as well as we thought we did. Losing four wickets for not many runs was always going to be a challenge in any form of cricket, especially this," New Zealand stand-in head coach Glenn Pocknall said after the match.

"We came back really well from that [collapse] with a good little partnership between Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls. I think we will take a lot from that performance in the way that they batted in the middle for our game in a couple of days' time."

The recent Bangladesh-Australia series, held at Mirpur, proved even 120-ish total can be enough for a win if the bowlers deliver.

New Zealand fielded three spinners - Ajaz Patel, Cole McConchie and Rachin Ravindra - in the first T20I. Patel returned with figures of 1/7 in four overs. The bowling is giving the Kiwis an encouragement to bounce back in the next four games.

"Both teams performed exceedingly well with the ball and two quality outfits in terms of spin bowlers and the fast bowlers were able to execute their slower balls," Pocknall said.

"I think the bowling attacks really even themselves out. So, the challenge in two days' time is to [find out] how we can get to a 100 and then, yeah, defend that. I think we can defend that with an extra few runs."
