Samuel Badree has been appointed assistant coach of the West Indies men's team for the forthcoming six-game white-ball series against South Africa.
Ahead of the three matches of the ODI and T20I series against South Africa, the West Indies have appointed former leg spinner Samuel Badree as their new assistant coach. Badree will only serve in the white ball series against South Africa, after which Cricket West Indies are likely to appoint someone for the full-time role.
Badree has previously worked as a spin bowling consultant for West Indies and Delhi Capitals (in the IPL) and believes this opportunity will be "a continuation and extension of that". In the final role, he will work alongside caretaker coach Andre Coley and Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, the newly appointed ODI and T20I captains respectively.
"I'm looking forward to connecting with the players I've played a few with and already know most of them as we try to do well on what is expected to be a challenging tour of South Africa," he said.
He added: "I'm looking forward to meeting up with the players I've played some with and already know most as we try to do well on what is expected to be a challenging tour of South Africa. I'm also looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with the players as we try to bring some positive results to our loyal fans."
Jimmy Adams, CWI's Director of Cricket said: “I am delighted that Samuel will be spending time with our white ball teams in South Africa. He brings a wealth of international experience and a strong desire to help our slow bowlers become world class. We believe this combination ideally positions him to bring tremendous value to our support staff in South Africa and our slow bowlers in particular."
Badree is a two-time T20 World Champion. He played a key role in both T20 World Cup winning campaigns in Sri Lanka in 2012 and India in 2016. Between 2012 and 2018 he played 52 T20Is and took 56 wickets - during which time he was the world's No. 1 bowler T20 format.
South Africa defeated the West Indies in the first Test by 87 runs
Notably, in the first Test match of the series, South Africa emerged victorious by beating the West Indies by 87 runs in Centurion. The Proteas were always in the driver's seat thanks to a solid batting performance from Aiden Markram in the first innings of the game, but the tide turned when they bundled the Temba Bavuma-led side for 116 in the second innings.
But despite a strong performance from Jermaine Blackwood (79/93) in the second innings of the game, the Caribbean team couldn't clear the hurdle. Meanwhile, the next test is scheduled to start on March 8 and will be held at Wanderers in Johannesburg.
