Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt has expressed his support for Babar Azam's recent decision to step down as Pakistan's white-ball captain. Sharing his thoughts in a video on his YouTube channel, Butt described this move as a positive step for both Babar and the Pakistan cricket team.
Babar Azam officially resigned from the white-ball captaincy, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) accepted his decision, which followed a secret report from coach Gary Kirsten. Babar's leadership had come under scrutiny, with growing pressure surrounding the team's performance and his own form.
Reflecting on the situation, Butt praised the timing of Babar’s resignation, noting that it would allow the star batter to concentrate on his strengths. “Babar Azam has resigned from white-ball captaincy, and I think there's nothing to talk about it. I think he has done the right thing and should have done it earlier,” said Butt.
Babar Azam's tenure as captain, which began in 2019, was filled with challenges. Under his leadership, Pakistan struggled to secure a major tournament win. Notably, the team was knocked out during the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup and failed to advance past the group stage in the 2024 T20 World Cup, following a shocking loss to co-hosts USA
Butt further highlighted that Babar had been underappreciated by many, which likely impacted his performance as captain. He added that by stepping down and focusing on his batting, Babar would once again shine as a world-class player, bringing more value to the team. “People were undermining him, and it was the right decision from Babar. He should focus more on his batting, and it will be more valuable for the Pakistan cricket team, and he is also a great batter,” Butt remarked.
