The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially declined the opportunity to host the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024, originally scheduled to be played in Bangladesh this October. With the BCCI stepping back, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a strong candidate to serve as the alternative venue for the prestigious ICC event.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is urgently seeking a new host for the tournament. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has requested additional time, anticipating a final decision by August 20, despite the expectation of an official announcement by August 15.
Initially, India and Sri Lanka were considered potential hosts for the tournament. However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has ruled out India’s involvement, citing the ongoing monsoon season and India’s commitment to hosting the Women's ODI World Cup next year. "They [ICC] have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no. We're in the monsoon, and on top of that, we will host the women's ODI World Cup next year. I don't want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups," Shah stated.
The ICC is now considering the UAE, which offers top-tier cricket facilities and a time zone similar to Bangladesh's, making it a strong contender. While Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka have also expressed interest in hosting, the clock is ticking with less than 50 days until the tournament's scheduled start. The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly keen to take on the responsibility, positioning the UAE as a likely venue for the Women's T20 World Cup 2024.
