West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite offered a candid assessment of his team’s performance following their 101-run defeat against Bangladesh in the second Test at Kingston. While acknowledging the efforts of individual players, Brathwaite stressed the need for improved execution under pressure and greater consistency in batting.
Reflecting on the team’s intent during the chase, Brathwaite said: "We wanted to be positive in the chase. I thought we started well. Not at the level we know we can be."
The captain highlighted that many of the players in the squad are relatively new to Test cricket and are still learning the ropes. However, he emphasized the importance of delivering under pressure: "Young guys, in terms of playing Test cricket, and obviously it is important to learn as you play. But in pressure situations, it is about executing better."
Brathwaite acknowledged the team’s struggles with shot selection and intent during crucial phases of the game. "Our execution could be a lot better in terms of our batting, during attacking shots especially. Once we get that right, this group can do great things with the bat."
He also pointed to the need for consistent intent across both innings: "As a group, having intent in both innings is something we need to improve. When setting or when chasing."
Despite the loss, Brathwaite found encouraging signs in the individual performances of his players. He praised Justin Greaves for his maiden Test century, as well as the bowling efforts of Jayden Seales: "Justin Greaves getting his first hundred. Unfortunate for Alick and Mikyle to not get theirs. Jayden's bowling for so few runs was truly amazing."
Brathwaite reiterated that consistency will be key to the team’s development: "For the batting group, we need consistency. Consistency in hard work as well. I believe we have the talent."
While West Indies fell short in this Test, Brathwaite’s balanced reflection highlights areas for growth while acknowledging the potential within the squad. With young players showing glimpses of their talent and key performers stepping up, the team has building blocks to work on as they aim for more consistent success in the future.
