New Zealand's forthcoming limited-overs tour of Australia has been postponed due to uncertainty as to when the squad could return home due to the isolation and quarantine rules being administered.
New Zealand's forthcoming limited-duration tour of Australia has now been postponed until further notice as New Zealand's quarantine requirements and border controls meant it was unclear when the squad could return home.
The Blackcaps tour of Australia for a white ball series originally scheduled to take place between January 24th and February 9th has been postponed. The visit has been postponed until further notice amid new government guidance from Jacinda Ardern following the emergence of the Omicron variant, according to a statement from New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
NZC CEO David White said the tour had been postponed amid uncertainty over when the team would be able to return as New Zealand introduced a mandatory 10-day isolation regime for incoming travellers. The NZC and Cricket Australia had even agreed to extend the tour to push back the date for their return, according to White, but the Ardern government could not give any certainty on whether they would be allowed back into the country.
"We are very disappointed not to be able to play the scheduled matches against New Zealand as planned but we will continue to work with New Zealand Cricket to postpone the series," said Nick Hockley, CA CEO, on Wednesday (January 19) . "We thank NZC who have made every effort to bring the series to fruition, but as they have been unable to obtain certainty on return quarantine regulations, this is simply not possible at this time.
Meanwhile, NZC chief executive David White said: "As we now know, the advent of Omicron led to a change of heart by the New Zealand government, resulting in a strict 10-day mandatory isolation period being imposed on all arriving travellers.
“NZC and CA had been looking at a proposal to extend the tour and postpone the date when the squad could return to New Zealand in the hope that that would be more achievable for the government. Unfortunately, this morning we received the information that this is not possible.
