As the exciting Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe continues in Sylhet, former Test captain Mominul Haque has started a new talk about the culture of Test cricket in Bangladesh and the quality of domestic wickets.
At the press conference after day 3, when Bangladesh finished with a 112-run lead over Zimbabwe, Mominul stressed that the local infrastructure, especially the wickets, needs to change before Bangladesh's Test cricket culture can change for the better.
"The name of domestic cricket won’t grow unless the wickets improve. If you prepare pitches like this (referring to the Sylhet Test wicket), it will encourage pace bowlers. Wickets are crucial. Every department of the game needs support like this,” said Mominul.
Mominul was also asked about whether allowing foreign players in Bangladesh’s domestic circuit could help raise standards. His response was measured, "If we bring in foreign players, a local player will lose his spot. It’s a gain in one area and a loss in another.”
His comments reflect the careful balance between developing homegrown talent and seeking outside exposure to enhance competitiveness.
Bangladesh had a tough first innings in the Sylhet Test, as they were bowled out for only 191 runs. Zimbabwe answered with 273 runs, giving them an 82-run lead. But Bangladesh came back strong in their second innings. At the end of Day 3, they were 194/4 and their captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, was still unbeaten on 60. The Tigers are now ahead by 112 runs, and things look like they've changed direction.
