Former England captain Michael Vaughan took a cheeky dig at young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after his dismissal on Day 3 of the third Test against Australia at the Gabba during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Jaiswal, who was dismissed early in India's innings, faced criticism for his careless shot off Mitchell Starc, a shot he had ironically practiced during warm-ups.
Before India's innings began, Jaiswal had a humorous moment during his pre-batting routine. While practicing with throw-downs, he flicked a delivery off his legs, accidentally hitting a Cricket Australia cameraman near the Australian team huddle. The Australian players jumped in surprise as Jaiswal's flick went straight towards them. Little did Jaiswal know, the same shot would lead to his early dismissal in the match.
When Jaiswal came out to bat, he was dismissed cheaply on just the second ball he faced. Mitchell Starc bowled a delivery on Jaiswal's pads, which the left-hander flicked straight to Mitchell Marsh at mid-wicket, ending his innings for a low score.
Commenting on Jaiswal's dismissal, Michael Vaughan was quick to connect the dots between his warm-up flick and the shot that led to his dismissal. "Five minutes before Jaiswal got out, this is the shot he practiced—that whip through mid-wicket, wonderful shot and good balance. And then in the match, he goes aerial and flicks it straight to the fielder. It was the pressure of the game," Vaughan said during commentary.
Vaughan, known for his humor, added a light-hearted remark: "That’s one way of getting ahead of the game… he’s just trying to take out Mitchell Starc before the game starts." His comment referred to the throwdown flick that nearly hit the Australian fast bowler during warm-ups.
