Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali launched a scathing attack on Babar Azam following Pakistan's embarrassing 120-run defeat to the West Indies in the second and final Test at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The loss allowed the visitors to level the two-match series 1-1, exposing Pakistan’s ongoing struggles in Test cricket.
Babar Azam, who has been under scrutiny due to his extended lean patch in the longest format, managed only 1 run off 5 balls in the first innings and 31 off 67 balls in the second innings of the recently concluded Multan Test. Basit Ali did not hold back in his criticism, urging Babar to take lessons from West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali said, “Babar Azam needs to learn batting from Motie. How to go front on the ball, which is front and back on the ball, which is back. It doesn't mean that you won't learn if you are a big player. The learning process should keep going on. Motie batted the best in this Test.”
Motie, primarily known for his spin bowling, impressed with his resilience at the crease, leading Basit Ali to cite him as an example for Babar Azam.
Basit further expressed his disappointment, stating, “The B team, C team, unknown players team, unknown bowlers, and unknown batters West Indies team has beaten Pakistan by 120 runs. Win-loss keeps happening. I am not going to do any post mortem because people think we do it for views. Let people think what they want. People will tell things; their work is to tell things.”
Babar Azam has been going through a rough patch in Test cricket, managing only 386 runs at an average of 24.12 in 16 innings since 2024. His highest score during this period has been 81, with only three fifties to his name. The Multan pitches, which heavily favored spin in both games, posed significant challenges for batters, but Babar’s lack of application was particularly concerning for a player of his caliber.
