Dasun Shanaka's tenure as the white-ball captain of Sri Lanka has concluded with the appointment of Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga to lead the ODI and T20I teams, respectively, by the country's new selection committee. As of now, Dimuth Karunaratne is in charge of the Test squad, marking the first time in three formats that Sri Lanka has had three distinct captains.

Shanaka was named Sri Lanka's captain in 2019 during their inaugural tour to Pakistan subsequent to the 2009 Lahore attack. However, his promotion to regular captain did not occur until 2021. Sri Lanka won 23 of 41 ODIs and 22 of 48 T20Is during his tenure. His tenure was highlighted by Sri Lanka's 2022 T20 Asia Cup victory in the UAE, which was won in a championship match against Pakistan.

Hasaranga and Mendis, his replacements, both possess recent leadership experience. Former Under-19 captain and current LPL commander of Dambulla Aura, Mendis is currently in charge. He assumed leadership of the 2023 ODI World Cup when Shanaka was sidelined with an injury in the middle of the tournament. Hasaranga, who is presently recuperating from hamstring surgery, captained B-Love Kandy to their inaugural LPL championship earlier this year.

As a member of the preliminary rosters for the January home limited-overs series against Zimbabwe, Shanaka may continue to be utilized in white-ball configurations for Sri Lanka.
