India spinner Kuldeep Yadav credits his recent success in white-ball cricket to his increased delivery speed and less reliance on his right leg. He continued his good form in the World Cup too as he dismissed David Warner and Glenn Maxwell in India's ODI World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday and contributed to his team’s easy 6-wicket win.
"Everyone told me my deliveries required pace but no one told me how to do it. Important aspect on a turner is the speed at which the ball turns. At times there are slow turners, important is to vary pace,” Kuldeep said.
"It wasn't a slow turner [in Chennai], but I had to increase the pace of my deliveries. For example, Glenn Maxwell didn't get time and if you saw how Smith got bowled (to Jadeja). So, along with turn, pace on deliveries also become important."
Kuldeep’s progression, particularly in one-day internationals over the past several years, has been nothing short of remarkable, and he's taken it to the next level in 2023. This year, Kuldeep has taken 35 wickets over 17 innings while maintaining an economy rate of 4.68 and a batting average of 16.31. There is no other Indian bowler who has taken more wickets in 2023 than he has.
