The 24-year-old, who suffered an injury scare during Pakistan's second Test loss to Bangladesh, has been cleared of any serious damage after scans ruled out a fracture. Khurram, who was instrumental in reducing Bangladesh to 26/6 in the first innings with a career-best 6/90, will now rest before rejoining the squad for the series starting on October 7 in Multan.
Khurram's injury history has been a concern for Pakistan, with the pacer recently returning from a stress fracture suffered on his debut in December 2023. Despite his limited game time, he has been impressive, taking 14 wickets in just three Test matches at an average of 24.85. However, a side niggle during the Bangladesh Test raised concerns, especially given Pakistan's recent struggles with injuries to fast bowlers like Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf.
Doctors have advised Khurram to rest, and he will miss the upcoming domestic Champions One-Day Cup as Pakistan focuses on his recovery for the all-important England series. Another MRI scan is scheduled next week to monitor his progress.
The three-match Test series against England will be a crucial test for Pakistan, who haven't won a home series since 2021 and are under intense scrutiny following their 2-0 whitewash by Bangladesh. The team's World Test Championship prospects are also hanging in the balance, and a fit Khurram Shahzad will be vital as Pakistan seeks to bounce back in front of their home crowd.
