South African spinner Keshav Maharaj became the No. 1 bowler in ODIs ahead of the start of the 2023 World Cup semifinals. At the top, he overtook Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj.
Ahead of the semi-final of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, there has been a major shift in the ICC ODI bowlers rankings as South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has pushed Indian seamer Mohammed Siraj off the top spot. In the latest update of the rankings, Maharaj has climbed to the top with 726 reviews while Siraj is at the second position with 723 reviews.
Maharaj was impressive in the mega event as he took 14 wickets in nine matches at an economy rate of 4.37 and picked up four wickets. Siraj, on the other hand, has 12 wickets to his name in nine matches in the tournament.
He also bowled a brilliant performance of 1/30 in ten overs against India in a high-scoring game in Kolkata. Apart from his bowling heroics, Maharaj also shone with the bat for the Proteas in their sixth league match against Pakistan in Chennai when he scored the winner in the 48th over with just one wicket left in the innings.
Siraj, who took six wickets in India's last three matches, is not too far behind Maharaj as just three rating points separate the two. His compatriots Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav occupy two of the three remaining spots in the top five.
Previously, Siraj was the No. 1 bowler, replacing Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has dropped to No. 9 in the rankings. Maharaj is at the top with 726 rating points while Siraj has 723 rating points.
Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav also moved up two places, to 4th and 5th respectively. Australian Josh Hazlewood and New Zealander Trent Boult fell in the rankings to 6th and 7th respectively.
Shubman Gill remains the No. 1 batsman in ODIs, followed by Pakistan captain Babar Azam in second place. Indian captain Rohit Sharma is the other Indian batsman in the top 10 of the ODI rankings.
Shreyas Iyer moved up five places in the rankings to 13th, while KL Rahul moved up six places to 18th. Both batters scored 100 against the Netherlands in India's last and final group game against the Netherlands.
Rahul also broke Rohit Sharma's record for the fastest hundred by an Indian batsman in ODI World Cup history.
