Jos Buttler wants to remain England's white-ball captain despite their dismal performance at the Cricket World Cup - and hopes to lead his country on the tour of the West Indies in December.
Jos Buttler will tell Rob Key this week that he wants to continue his role as England captain in both ODI and T20I cricket, starting with their tour of the Caribbean in December.
Buttler's England side ended a five-match losing streak on Wednesday night when they beat the Netherlands by 160 runs in Pune, leaving them seventh in the World Cup group stage ahead of the final round of play.
England have lost six of their eight World Cup games, aiming to successfully defend the title they won on home soil in 2019 and the best they can hope for is a top eight finish and the 2025 Champions Trophy to reach.
Skipper Buttler, who averaged just 13.87 and peaked at 43 in the tournament, and head coach Matthew Mott will soon speak to cricket chief executive Rob Key about England's punishing campaign after his arrival in India.
There have been questions about the leadership of the team in India, which Key may want to examine in more detail, but Buttler has made it clear he wants to lead a much-changed side when they tour the West Indies next month.
Asked if he would travel as skipper, Buttler said: “Yes, I would like to do that. I know Rob Key is arriving in India (last night). We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and make a plan for this tour. But yes, I would like to do that.
“I am competitive, I want to win every game, whether it is a card game or a cricket game.
“That’s why I’m happy about this win. It was a frustrating time as we didn't win any cricket matches or play as well as we would have liked. I’m happy about this win.”
England now travel to Kolkata for their final World Cup game against Pakistan on Saturday as they look to secure a place in the top eight and qualification for the Champions Trophy.
Buttler added: “It’s a huge game for us, crucial. We didn’t perform the way we wanted throughout the trip and we want to leave India with a decent performance.”
“We are very focused on the Champions Trophy and are determined to make sure we are there.”
