England captain Jos Buttler has revealed his retirement plans in the One Day International (ODI) format ahead of his team's first warm-up match against the hosts. India, on Saturday. Of late, there have been reports that the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 will be the last tournament to feature several major players who have long dominated the format at the peak of their careers.
Buttler, 33, is one of the most important figures in English cricket history. He was one of the key factors in England's first World Cup triumph in 2019 after they beat New Zealand.
England are the 50-over and T20 world champions and Jos Buttler will be under pressure to defend the title. The wicketkeeper-batter is apparently positive about his team's performance in the tournament.
Speaking to media, Buttler spoke about his retirement plans and said he is looking forward to leading England at this World Cup and is excited to see where the journey takes him.
“Hopefully I’ll be playing for England for a while longer. I know I just passed 33, but I don't feel that old. I don't think anything can quite replicate playing for your country. It's a great honor that you don't take for granted, but at the same time I'm pretty calm. This is where I'm at in my career. I look forward to whatever is left. I still feel like there are areas where I want to improve and get better as a player, which is a nice place to be because it gives you desire and motivation,” Buttler said.
In a changing cricket environment where many top players have ended their 50-plus-year careers to focus on the shorter format and compete in the leagues, Buttler acknowledged the change and said he would choose his path carefully .
“Whatever happens, it will work itself out. The landscape has changed a bit and there are more options now. It’s just a question of what’s right for the future and what’s best,” Buttler said.
“We are eagerly looking forward to the World Cup and can look back on an impressive group of players. Representing your country at the World Cup is an exciting experience that requires our full concentration. We want everyone in the team to stay firmly in the present moment,” Buttler concluded.
