Jon Lewis has quit his role as England women's cricket team head coach after the team suffered a 16-0 defeat in this winter's multi-format Ashes series
Jon Lewis step down as the England women's team head coach with immediate effect on Friday, March 21. Under his guidance, which started in November 2022, England has won an impressive 52 out of their 73 games in all formats. The performance has taken England to second position in both the ICC ODI and T20I world rankings, after Australia.
England under the captaincy of Lewis made it to the semi-finals of the 2023 ICC Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa. But last year in the same tournament's previous edition, they just failed to make it to the semi-finals, reflecting both their achievement and the close margins in high-level women's cricket.
"I've loved being head coach of the England women's team," Lewis added. "Unfortunately, I will no longer be able to fulfill this immensely challenging but exhilarating task of building up this young squad and winning while building up the women's game here.".
I have worked hard with this group of young players to improve their skills and knowledge of contemporary white-ball cricket, continuing to make sound progress in 2024, winning 83% of all our games.
I am delighted that we saw record attendances in 2023 and 2024, and I am determined to keep pushing women's cricket forward. I wish all the players all the best and thank them for allowing me to be part of their journey."
After his resignation, Clare Connor, Chief Executive of English Women's Cricket and Deputy Chief Executive of the English Cricket Board (ECB), expressed gratitude to Jon for his service and recognized his contribution to the cause of women's cricket in trying times.
"I would like to thank Jon for all he has achieved in his time as Head Coach. He took on the role after a very challenging period for cricketers during the pandemic, and one of his main tasks was to establish the right conditions for the team to develop and flourish," she added.
Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive, added that Jon had given his best to English women's cricket, just as he had to the men and the Young Lions.
He thanked Jon for his service and wished him all the best for the future. "Jon has sacrificed everything for English women's cricket, as he had sacrificed previously for the men and Young Lions. We are extremely thankful to him and wish him well for the future," he stated.
