England have pocketed the first day of second Test. Joe Root's superb hundred drove England to the safe shores after a wobbling start in the morning. Gus Atkinson also helped Root in stitching the partnership to bail England out of trouble. 

Joe Root notched up his 33rd Test hundred and has levelled up with Sir Alastair Cook as most Test hundred for England. 
Being inserted to bat first, England lost three wickets in the morning, although there wasn’t much assistance in the pitch for pacers. However, a couple of partnerships were being built at the middle as Harry Brook and Wicket-keeper batter Jamie Smith held on there for some moments but Sri Lanka kept picking up wickets at regular intervals to leave England stutter on 216-6.

And then Joe Root and Gus Atkinson stood like wall and stitched up for a mesmerizing 92-run stand to take England to the safe shores. Joe Root notched up his 33rd century and levelled up Sir Alastair Cook's most Test centuries for England.

Root fell against the run of play after scoring a ground-breaking 143. While Gus Atkinson took England through the stumps being unscathed as he's unbeaten on 74* off only 81 balls.

England are currently on 358-7, with Gus Atkinson still on the crease England will be hoping for having over 400 on the board tomorrow. While Sri Lanka need to clean the tail as soon as possible in the morning to restrict England inside 400 runs.
