Star England batter Joe Root has added another remarkable achievement to his glittering career, becoming the sixth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. On Sunday, September 8, during Day 3 of the ongoing third Test against Sri Lanka at The Oval, Root leapfrogged Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara to achieve this milestone. The 33-year-old, who is currently the No. 1 Test batter in the ICC rankings, has been in exceptional form, continuing to build on his legacy in the longest format.
Root surpassed Sangakkara’s career tally of 12,400 Test runs by scoring 11 runs during England’s second inning. The milestone came with a boundary on the first ball of the 15th over, as Root drove a delivery through the cover region. With this shot, Root moved past Sangakkara, accumulating a total of 12,402 runs from 146 matches and 267 innings, placing him sixth on the all-time run-scorers list in Test cricket.
Root now stands just behind former England captain Sir Alastair Cook, who holds the fifth position with 12,472 Test runs. Root's rise through the ranks is a testament to his consistency, adaptability, and immense skill over his 11-year career in international cricket.
