India found themselves struggling at 213 for nine in response to Australia's commanding first innings total of 445 in the ongoing third Test at the Gabba. However, a defiant 10th-wicket partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep ensured India avoided the follow-on, a critical moment that frustrated Australia's push for victory.
Australia's assistant coach Daniel Vettori praised the Indian tailenders' effort in the post-day press conference.
"I think the only way to force the game was to enforce the follow-on. There was a desperation to get that final wicket. We thought we had a really good chance when Jadeja was dismissed, but it was a real fighting partnership from Bumrah and Deep," Vettori said.
Vettori also lauded Jasprit Bumrah for his ability to contribute in lower-order partnerships despite his batting average not reflecting his capabilities.
"Bumrah has proven that he can attack and defend, and I think Akash Deep is better than a number 11. Every wicket is vitally important, and there's no reason to back off against any opposition," Vettori added.
Rain interruptions also played a role in the match, helping Australia cope with the absence of Hazlewood, who suffered a calf injury.
“The weather allowed us to operate in terms of breaks, with Mitch (Starc) and Patty (Cummins) able to come back on multiple occasions. If it had been full 90 overs, it would have been a lot tougher to manage. We always have the luxury to bowl Nathan (Lyon). So that alleviated a little bit of the concern,” Vettori added.
Reflecting on Hazlewood’s injury, Vettori expressed disappointment at the timing of the setback.
"He’s pretty despondent. It’s unfortunate to come back after another injury and then pick up a calf injury here, especially under these circumstances," he said.
