England have named their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, with bowlers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes recalled and struggling opener Jason Roy dropped.
After a poor run for his national team and in The Hundred, Jason Roy misses out on the group of 15, with England favoring Phil Salt, who made his T20I debut earlier this year. Since the last edition of the T20 World Cup in 2021 in the United Arab Emirates, Roy has competed in 11 T20Is and scored 206 runs with an 18.72.
The 2022 T20 World Cup begins on October 22 and England – who were champions in that format in 2010 – begin their campaign against Afghanistan.
"Both players last played for England during the West Indies Test tour in March," read an official release.
England will play their first game of the T20 World Cup against Afghanistan in Perth on October 22. Jos Buttler's side will take on Australia on October 28, while the Three Lions take on New Zealand on November 1.
Salt's selection is a reward for their strong domestic form in the ongoing The Hundred tournament. He's among the top run getters, currently in 2nd place with 313 runs in eight games and a 44.71 average.
Jos Buttler is leading the team in its first global tournament as captain, taking over from Eoin Morgan, who retired from international cricket earlier this year.
Buttler is currently out with a calf injury meaning Moeen Ali will lead the squad for England's pre-season tour to Pakistan where they will play Babar Azam's side in seven T20Is.
England are confident Buttler will recover in the final stages of the series against Pakistan.
