James Anderson, the legendary England fast bowler, is reportedly in discussions with Lancashire to resume his playing career this summer. The veteran pacer, who turns 43 this year, has not played professional cricket since retiring from international cricket last July following England’s first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s.
Despite stepping away from international cricket, Anderson has remained active in the sport through his role as a bowling consultant for the England Men’s team. Although he hasn't played a competitive match since his farewell Test, reports suggest that Anderson has stayed in top shape by regularly bowling in the nets during his coaching stints with the national team.
He has also worked closely with the team’s strength and conditioning staff during tours to Pakistan and New Zealand.
Anderson, who made his first-class debut for Lancashire back in 2002, has had an illustrious career, helping the county win the 2011 County Championship.
His Test career concluded after 188 matches, in which he took an extraordinary 704 wickets at an average of 26.45. This achievement places him as the third-highest wicket-taker in Test history, behind only Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.
Anderson’s surprise international retirement last year left fans shocked, but it now appears he may not be entirely done with playing cricket.
His potential return to the County would not only be a boost for Lancashire but would also add significant star power to the domestic competition. Young batsmen around the country would relish the opportunity to face one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time.
England’s next Test match is scheduled for May 22 against Zimbabwe, which leaves Anderson with the chance to feature in up to five County Championship matches for Lancashire before any possible coaching commitments.
