Former England Women's cricketer and commentator Isa Guha has come under fire for a racially insensitive comment directed towards India pacer Jasprit Bumrah during her commentary for Fox Sports on Day 2 of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 third Test between India and Australia at The Gabba, Brisbane.
Guha’s remark was made while discussing Bumrah's impressive performance in the match, where he claimed his 12th Test five-wicket haul, including the dismissals of Travis Head (152) and Steve Smith (101). Bumrah, who has been India’s standout bowler in the series with 17 wickets across five innings, received widespread praise for his efforts, with Australia legend Brett Lee lauding his impact.
However, the controversy arose when Guha referred to Bumrah as a "primate" while discussing his importance to the Indian team.
“Bumrah, today: five overs, 2-4. So, that’s the tone, and that’s what you want from the ex-skipper,” Lee said on Fox Sports.
She added: “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? The most valuable primate is Jasprit Bumrah. He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match, and whether he would be fit.”

The remark instantly drew comparisons to the infamous ‘Monkeygate’ scandal during the 2008 Border-Gavaskar series, where Harbhajan Singh was accused of racially abusing Andrew Symonds by calling him a "monkey" during a heated moment at the SCG.
Jasprit Bumrah, despite the off-field controversy, has been in stellar form throughout the series, delivering match-defining performances for India. His five-wicket haul on Day 2 played a crucial role in keeping Australia’s batting line-up in check. With Mitchell Starc being the next-best in the wickets tally for the series with 11 wickets, Bumrah has firmly established himself as India's most valuable player.
